Welcome – The Baskett One-Name Study

Researchers who are following this surname are welcome to contact me. I am a member of several genealogical societies including the Isle of Wight FHS, Devon FHS, Kent FHS, Glasgow and West Scotland, the Western Australian Genealogical Society (WAGS) to name a few plus some surname lists. See the Rootsweb Baskett Surname List which has a lot of USA members. I am hoping to see more UK and Australian members joining in.

Several Baskett researchers have joined me during the past 4 years and we keep in touch on a regular basis. I have launched a Baskett Study drop box and inside the box is a folder for each researcher who contacts me – they enter their information and this is readily shared between us. My latest contact is 86 years young and thrilled to be in touch and her grandfather was the brother of my great grandmother Ellen Ann Baskett.

Name Frequency
At the time of commencing this ONS, in 2009:
Frequency: (673) (number of times this surname appears in a sample database of 88.7 million names, representing one third of the 1997 US population)
English:
1. from Middle English basket baskett, hence a metonymic occupational name for a basket maker, or perhaps, as Reaney suggests, for someone who carried baskets of stone to a lime kiln. In some cases, it appears to have been a topographic name for someone who lived at a house distinguished by the sign of a basket (who was therefore probably a basket maker).
2. habitational name for someone from Bascote in Warwickshire, probably so named with an unattested Old English personal name Basuca + cot (cottage).
